Frank Miller Sucks

Ever since The O.C.'s Seth Cohen peaked into public consciousness with the force of a tiny, almost-imperceptible hurricane, admitting to reading comic books has become less and less something one needs to hide from prospective dates. But there was a time when nerd-chic came and went in brief flashes, during which we put away our cultural obsessions with sports and manliness for a nanosecond and embraced power fantasies. That being said, overt misogyny bridges both outlets of the unconscious, so sports fans and comic geeks could have theoretically come together in a big circle jerk of sexism.
Which brings us to our Suck recipient of the day: graphic novelist/director Frank Miller, who's now careened from questionable gender politics to conservative pedagogy. I've already opined at length in these Web pages about 300 doubling as the Sin City scribe's jingoistic paeon to repressed homosexuality. But with the success of The Dark Knight and with Miller's The Spirit coming out in a couple of months, now seems as good a time as any to let loose a torrent of invective, the likes of which Miller will never see nor care about.
The thing is, while Miller's earlier work was fun, he has descended into the depths of self-parody, turning quicker and quicker within the widening gyre of bad writing and general lunacy.
His paper-thin characters and constant noir retreads were already the pits. And his relegation of female characters to whores and sex objects should have been the last straw of repudiation for his trite whirlygigs. But the point where we must turn our backs forever has to be the literary insanity he's displayed in the wake of the war on terror.
Now, a lot of entertainers and writers lost their shit when the shit hit the fan. Dennis Miller went from being an unfunny comedian to being even unfunnierest. Christopher Hitchens went from being a lovable scamp to being an execrable bore. And now Frank Miller's gone from pastiche-pusher to Ranty Joe, writing comics about Batman fighting Al- Qaeda.
Watch out, Gotham! You've survived lunatic criminals, earthquakes, uh, magic things that... do... damage. But some run-of-the mill Islamist terrorists, well, they really make The Joker look pale by comparison. Maybe the Riddler and Kim Jong Il can team up someday.

Thank you for being one of the few people on earth apparently able to admit this. Outside of drawing a few spectacular Spider-man issues (and an 'amazing' annual with Doc Ock and the Punisher) that were written by Priest (back when he was still Jim Owsley) and Denny 'Oneil I've don't think he's ever done anything worthwhile. At least none of his stuff that has the major push behind it like 'Dark Knight Returns'. 'Sin City' made for a decent movie (that looks awful on cable due to the way it was shot) but if the one/two punch of the impending shitstorm that is 'the Spirit' and the continuing overkill joke of Allstar Batman don't finally get other people to acknowledge it then I'm fully convinced that the world is insane.
Posted 10/07/2008 at 06:29:56 PMwow...neither andy or the idiot who wrote the comment above have ever read very many comics or probably many books for that matter...well i suggest you both try reading the daredevil stories or hard boiled or maybe even batman year one, all written by frank miller... not to mention the dark night returns (that series changed comics and pop culture in a big way)... millers new work may not be as provacative as it once was but look at you andy, what the fuck have you done lately write a shitty little blog...wow you have alot to be proud of... go out and do some thing half as inspiring as frank miller and then get back to me...that will be the day...
Posted 10/07/2008 at 07:05:39 PMSo... if I understand you correctly, huhwhut, Andy is not qualified to offer an opinion on Miller's work because he has not achieved what Miller has. That's fucking moronic. You know that, right? By your alleged logic re: Andy, you yourself should not be qualfied to say that you don't like the food at any restaurant unless you were at some point employed as a chef. You shouldn't be allowed to say anything negative about a politician unless you, huhwhut, were at some point elected to public office. Your alleged rationale here is frighteningly stupid---but then, we are on the internet. And just to annoy you further, I should let you know that to a certain extent, I agree with you both: Miller's Daredevil stuff was great, Batman: Year One was one of the best Batman stories ever told in the character's 70 year history, and while I can't say that I completely likje the effect that Dark Knight has had on comics and pop culture, there's no denying that it has had one. BUT---this is all stuff that the man did a number of years ago. His more recent output is an entirely different story: Sin City is an okay gimmick that gets old fast, 300 is hardly worth mentioning in any way, form or fashion, and the writing on All-Star Batman is a giant, steaming load. If he were a ball player, he'd have gone from batting .375 to .035, and let go from the team. Worse, he's the reason that every night, I can hear a distant whirring sound that must be Will EIsner doing 78rpm in his grave!
Whether we agree with one another or not, we're all entitled to our opinions, huhwhut, not because of what we've achieved but because we have working brains and the rational and critical functions that go with that. If the only thing that qualified us to criticize something was having achieved as much as those we're commenting on, we'd all (you included!) have to keep our big fat mouths shut.
Of course, our opinions mean so much more if we have a working knowledge of punctuation....:-D
Posted 10/07/2008 at 10:53:36 PMSo... if I understand you correctly, you jock andy and you feel compelled to protect him...i never said he isn't entitled to his "opinion"...i really don't think he understands frank millers work and what he has been doing all these years...like many on the internet thy are not very schooled on the subjects they write about, yet they have a whole lot to spew about...next time maybe andy will do his home work before he attempts critical writing...and as for you, NO! you didn't understand me correctly...i suggest you: "go out and do some thing half as inspiring as frank miller (OR ME) and then get back to me...that will be the day..." hahaha
Posted 10/08/2008 at 03:10:07 PMhuhwhut-
I don't think I'll ever have read as many comics as you, but at least I have read the title. it is called the dark KNIGHT returns. I've read more than just the recommended section of the local Barnes and Noble.
Ah, just yankin' ya chain. I've read too many comics in my life, and Frank Miller is nothing special. He's like Brian De Palma, getting a lot of credit for not much substantial output. Alan Moore is revered and has created a tome of work to be admired, Grant Morrison, Julius Schwartz, George Perez, Steve Gerber, Marv Wolfman.
And just because someone has "inspired" as much as another person they are criticized, doesn't disqualify them to offer a thought. You can type on here until you're blue in fingers, and never offer anything truly substantial, neither will I unless I stop typing. Look, the first guy intelligently formed a thought, your rant was rash and fanboyish. You have no idea if he has read many comics in his life, but you point is invalid as such. Make a better argument, and you will have the day. But Frank Miller still sucks and no one care about your rants nextr months. But oddly I do right now...
Posted 10/20/2008 at 11:29:24 PMWell I've definitely read more then what some volume of '100 greatest graphic novels' told me to so at the very least I can offer an opinion on something I chose to leaf through as opposed to what I was told to.
I'll be the first to admit that a lot of my taste in comics is crass and commercial so maybe I don't see the huge pop culture canvas that comic books apparently painted on, what with the market pretty much slowly dying after the end of the holofoil age. I like what I like and for the most part I don't like Frank Miller's stuff. To me it's not the beginning of a new epoch; it's a foot note in the seemingly endless 'modern age' where everyone mistook grittiness for being profound. The Miller DD run is fun for what it is but I'll still hold up that the Dark 'K'night returns (the k is optional apparently) is pretty awful. Sure it means a lot to some people but so does Youngblood #1. Then again I consider Miller's stuff to be as commercial as possible what with the fact that there's an entire marketing campaign around labeling stuff with his name so maybe I just fail to comprehend this wry artistic genius with his masters degree in women degradation.
As for understanding Miller's work, I defy anyone to claim that they understand All-star Batman. That book is like swimming in liquid heroin after downing 2 jars of oxycontin with a morphine chaser as far as rationality goes. The only thing that will inspire anyone to do is forget how to read so they can indulge in art: the only reason anyone I know is buying that high grade toilet paper for.
P.S. if Andy's blog is so shitty, then how pathetic are you for reading it?
Posted 10/21/2008 at 12:30:36 AMdear jaysun...u care cause ur a "fanboy" of andy so i guess that makes ur point(s) "invalid",...(i luv the fact that your inspired by nothing more this BS blog)...and whos being spoon fed w/ ur little comment about de palma...p.s i had no idea barnes and noble carries comic, but thanks...and for you "lemonfreshviper"...ur love for andy is pathetic, i only happened upon this crap site outta boredom...now go do something with ur life besides jocking andy i dont think he goes for little boys (or maybe?)
Posted 11/21/2008 at 07:03:47 PMAlright lemme throw my two cents in. I'll preface this by admitting I dont read a whole lot of comics (I mean other than Calvin and Hobbes), and have no idea who any of you are. But huhwhat, its easy to see that you are an arrogant prick, who thinks yours is the only right opinion. In sports you would be called Skip Bayless or Colin Cowherd or Jim Rome. All of whom are obnoxious assholes. That said you do have a right to your opinion, and in your defense, Frank Miller would not be so famous and successful if there werent a lot of people who shared your opinion. That being said. . .
I am so effing tired of the film noir theme. Women fall into two categories: helpless sex objects, or sex objects with guns. Everyone talks like its 1930. Theres unnecessary brutality, and the characters are SO one-dimensional, and the stories so pathetically predictable, you find yourself pulling for the bad guys. The films are so self-congratulatory, and you'll notice that movies like that take themselves so seriously and are hideously unfunny.
It's a tired stupid idea and I'm sick of seeing it on the big screen. Sin City got a point for being pretty damn entertaining, and 300, while a bad movie, was delightfully bloody and violent, and I knew what I was getting. But "The Spirit" and whatever the hell that half-batman thing thats later coming out, thats taking it too far. We've seen enough of this crap! Just because your movie has sex and violence and one-liners, and a high degree of fake blood, shot with funky color filters, does not mean its must-see! Stop rehashing the same crap, the same annoying, prepackaged, smooth-ass hollywood shit, and charging us money! You should be on the fucking breadlines
Posted 12/09/2008 at 11:55:45 PMdavid ur so stupid, you don't deserve a comment
