Welcome to NCDSUV's newest daily feature, where we acknowledge another turn of the calendar for a member of Hollywood land, even if it's a celebrity who often goes overlooked by the rest of the blogosphere, and regardless of whether we have a huge affinity for their body of work.
We kick things off on this Halloween Eve (which, yes, is a bit redundant) with one of the screen's greatest underrated nerds not named Rick Moranis...
Today's Awesome Celebrity Birthday Belongs To:
Charles Martin Smith
Age: 55
Why He's Sort Of Awesome: Depends on your generation. Adults of the '70s who were nostalgic for their childhood from the '50s will recall Smith (or Martin Smith?) as Terry "The Toad" from American Graffiti, '80s filmgoers and mob-movie fanatics still revere him as the brains behind Kevin Costner and Sean Connery's brawn in The Untouchables, and contemporary culture consumers may remember him from, well, some Law & Order and stuff.
Most Likely Celebrity Status 20 Birthdays From Now: Widely acknowledged for a Clint Eastwood-esque second life as a director of dramatic mood pieces for both stage and screen.
All Apologies To: Henry Winkler, Grace Slick
Tune in tomorrow, Halloween (mwahahaha), for a spooky second edition of NCDSUV's Awesome Celebrity Birthday Of The Day.

Yes, I love this guy! And nobody knows his name. I root for him like I used to root for Paul Giamatti until he finally got an award for John Adams. The scientist guy at the beginning of Deep Impact. The other scientist guy in Starman. Another scientist guy in an X-Files episode. No end of bit-part character roles in movies and TV. When will he catch a break??

Anyway, Martin Smith is outstanding, and totally one of those guys who has more of a high profile moment as a leading actor than he ever expected or asked for, and was subsequently happy staying mostly behind the camera or in bit parts.
But the bigger question might actually be where the fuck Moranis went.
